Executive Summary
Founded in 1978, Episcopal Charities is committed to supporting new and existing nonprofit agencies in their effort to make a crucial difference in the lives of poor, oppressed and endangered individuals in need in the San Francisco Bay Area, regardless of their religious affiliation or practice. Episcopal Charities is seeking an Executive Director who will lead the organization in the implementation of a new strategic vision, centered around engaged philanthropy (which we define as grant support consisting of a combination of financial assistance and specific non-financial support requested by individual grantees), that has been adopted by its Board of Directors. The Executive Director will be an entrepreneurial, proactive, collaborative and charismatic leader capable of leading the Board of Directors, while recruiting interested individuals to become actively involved members of Healthcare and Education Impact Groups to be formed. The Impact Groups will identify or develop, and recommend, candidates for engaged philanthropic grants. The Executive Director leads a staff of three (a part-time development director, a part-time CFO and a fulltime administrative support person). The Executive Director reports to the Board and serves at its will.
Background
Almost twenty-five years ago, then Mayor Dianne Feinstein called Bishop William Swing, Bishop of the Diocese of California and Chairman of the Board of Episcopal Charities, and asked for assistance in responding to a temporary homelessness crisis. Working with Episcopal Charities, Bishop Swing opened the basement of Grace Cathedral to provide cots for 40 individuals who had no other place to stay. This initial call for assistance was the beginning of a engaged philanthropic collaboration between the Episcopal Diocese of California and Episcopal Charities that resulted in the formation of Episcopal Community Services, an Episcopal Charities partner agency that provides emergency shelter for 500 people each night and housing for more than 1,000 formerly homeless men, women, and children in ten supportive housing sites throughout San Francisco.
Episcopal Charities works with fourteen Partner Agencies, all of which have their histories intertwined with the Diocese of California. These agencies offer a broad range of services throughout the Bay Area that are non-sectarian and available to all. The support that Episcopal Charities has provided in recent years has been primarily through money grants, although it has also worked with its Partner Agencies to raise awareness of their needs and of the services they provide, publicized their successes, and convened roundtable discussions among the Partner Agencies concerning areas of shared interest. In some cases, like Episcopal Community Services, Episcopal Charities was also involved in the initial formation of the agency.
During 2007 the Episcopal Charities Board of Directors engaged in a visioning process, which included interviews with stakeholders including Board members, Partner agency directors, donors, and diocesan representatives. As a result of this process, EC determined that it would have the most significant impact if it moved to a model of engaged philanthropy and concentrated its efforts on the areas of healthcare and education as the most pressing issues affecting poor, oppressed and endangered members of the Bay Area. During the remainder of 2008 and 2009, the EC Executive Director will establish a Healthcare Impact Group and an Education Impact Group and recruit knowledgeable individuals in each of these fields, as well as interested individuals, to become members of these groups. The Executive Director will also work with each Impact Group to identify and recommend to the EC Board potential grantees in its respective focus area that emphasize and reward (a) collaboration among parishes and other agencies, including Partner Agencies; (b) ventures that are early-stage, undergoing significant change, or at a critical strategic juncture where EC’s contribution of money, as well as the active involvement of the members of the Impact Groups, can make a critical difference; (c) ventures that have the ability to grow to serve more people or have their model and central ideas replicated throughout the Bay Area; and (d) ventures that have a plan for continuing operations through an earned income and/or sustainable funding strategy.
